Extraordinary Chester schoolgirl raises over £56k for charity
Published date: 30 December 2009 | Published by: Matt Sims
A TEENAGER from Chester who battled back from a stroke and a brain tumour has raised more than £56,000 to fund more research into the disease.
Hannah Jones, 16, has undergone three operations to remove cancerous tissue since being diagnosed with astrocytic glioma in August last year.
After her last op, in February, she suffered a stroke.
But she has since fought back and raised a huge sum for the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust, which funds research into the disease.
Hannah, of Lache, was at Gwersyllt’s Somerfield store to draw a raffle organised by her grandmother Pat Jones, of Cymau, near Wrexham, and staff member Pat Nicholls.
The fundraiser generated £600 for the good cause, with an earlier bag packing event raising £310.
Hannah’s grandmother Pat said: “She has been absolutely brilliant throughout it all. She’s an inspiration and has raised so much.”
Earlier this month, a coffee morning, in Cymau, raised nearly £4,000.
Since recovering from her last operation, Hannah, a pupil at Christleton High School, has undergone six months of intense chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
Her most recent MRI scan, on December 1, showed no traces of cancerous tissue.
But she will have to undergo regular tests every three months to check it has not returned.
She is now campaigning hard for more funding to research potential treatment for brain tumours.
She said: “There’s no way I’m giving up until they have got a cure.”
Speaking about her third operation, earlier this year, she said: “It (the cancer) chose to set up camp again so I had to have another operation after it regrew and that’s why I had a stroke - because
it was growing around the cerebral artery.”
Hannah, who won BBC Switch Live’s Teen Hero award in November, has even set up her own petition for more research into the disease.
So far, it has been signed by more than 2,500 people. It can be found by logging on to petitions.number10.gov.uk/Brain tumours.
